What is Escitalopram (Lexapro)?
Escitalopram, marketed under the brand name Lexapro, is an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) antidepressant. It is primarily prescribed to treat depression and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Escitalopram works by increasing serotonin levels in the brain, which helps to improve mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Common side effects of Escitalopram include nausea, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, anxiety, trouble sleeping, and sexual problems. Some individuals may experience more severe side effects, such as mood changes, increased suicidal thoughts, or bleeding.
Escitalopram should not be combined with MAO inhibitors or taken within 14 days of discontinuing MAO inhibitors. It should be used cautiously in patients with a history of mania, seizures, liver or kidney disease, and those who are prone to bleeding.
